One cool thing going on that I didn't get to in my column is the second annual Omaha Girls Rock camp.
The camp for girls ages 8-18 is designed to use music to teach young women to use their voice both literally and metaphorically, to empower them to be their most confident and creative selves!
The camp culminates with a show Saturday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m., putting the girls and their bands together onstage at Slowdown.
HearNebraska.org has been documenting the daily sessions with photo essays.
You can find the most recent photos by photographer Mike Machian here

to drink with the band!
I'm really excited about the return of David Olney & Sergio Webb to the Sunday Roadhouse at The Side Door Lounge this Sunday, Aug. 5. Their last gig was epic and a bit hard to quantify...there's music, featuring Olney's perceptive and unique songwriting and Webb's instrumental virtuosity, there's laughter, sometimes there's poetry.
The Side Door Lounge is located at 3530 Leavenworth St.
Doors open at 4, show starts at 5 p.m. Tickets at the door are $20.

Here's one of my favorite tunes of theirs, as recorded by Music Fog in March, 2010.

Benson First Friday is going on tonight, Friday, Aug. 3. Art is displayed in many stores and shops and even bars throughout Benson. There are street performances from DJs and bands. You'll find maps and information posted throughout Benson this evening. There is an artist's market inside the Benson Theatre and brief tours of the usually off-limits stage space will be available also.
Happy hour specials at a few venues with art on display from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Check it all out on the Benson First Friday (BFF) event page Benson First Friday on Facebook

And if you don't do anything else I suggest this year, at least go buy Jon Dee Graham's wonderful new disc Garage Sale. Check it out and purchase digital downloads here jondeegrahamco.bandcamp.com/
The first four songs alone are worth the price of the disc! I LOVE, Love, LOVE the opening track "Unafraid."
Please remember to head on over to the official Hoodoo column in The Reader for more musings from me. You'll always find the latest column
