Dennis Gruenling, Doug Deming and The Jewel Tones have been playing some great gigs in SoCal this past week. They even had Rick Estrin and Little Charlie come out to their Tuesday night gig and sit in.
Little Charlie raved about the band in a Facebook post, writing in part
Tonight I was absolutely blown away by Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones featuring Dennis Gruenling. I had seen Doug and Dennis separately, but never together, and their act is full of energy, lots of great tunes and nice arrangements, and everyone in the band obviously loves what they do.

The 21st Saloon celebrates the return of the Gas House Gorillas Thursday, April 10, 6-9 p.m. The Brooklyn-based band calls their entertaining sound and style “punk Americana.” Rockabilly Magazine writes of the group, “This is what a popular culture roadmap might sound like. Thursday, May 15, The 21st hosts an indoor-outdoor show featuring the wonderful Sue Foley & Peter Karp and their band. Studebaker John will actually be at McKenna’s this Friday, April 4, 8
p.m. Last week's column contained an error from incorrect information I
had on the date. So, you still have a chance to see Chicago’s Studebaker
John, who is an accomplished blues guitarist, singer-songwriter and
harmonica player. His gritty style and uniquely gear-grinding guitar
sound is steeped in the traditional electrified blues traditions of
Chicago’s blues clubs and Maxwell Street market where electric blues was
born and forged. His sound is fueled by influences like J.B. Hutto,
Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor and Little Walter and Big Walter.

21st Saloon Thursdays Damon Fowler is
up at The 21st Saloon Thursday, April 3, 6-9 p.m. The Florida-based
guitarist has been seen previously at The 21st as part of the band
Southern Hospitality where he shares the frontman duties with J.P. Soars
and Victor Wainwright. Fowler was the 2009 winner of the Blues
Foundation’s International Blues Challenge and also won the Albert King
Award recognizing the best guitarist in the competition. Fowler has also
received honors in Creative Loafing magazine’s “Best of Tampa” poll,
naming him Best Guitarist, Slide Guitarist, Lap Steel Player and Dobro

their mix of rockabilly, swing and jump music. One reviewer proclaimed
the band is “a punked-up and energized controlled catastrophe in the

was augmented with detours to New Orleans and rocked-up and -out nods
