Lyle, Carolyn and More

If you missed the great Lyle Lovett show this past Tuesday at the Holland...I ran across a very cool recording of Lyle and his band running through a very similar set in Brooklyn earlier this summer...audio only in the NPR archives. A full 100 plus minutes of great music.
Check it out here
npr.org/event/music/158653727/lyle-lovett-in-concert
Live and in this recording Lyle talks about a great influence on his music, Eric Taylor, who was part of the early singer-songwriter folk scene along with folks like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and others. Lyle performs Eric's song "Understand You," in concert and on his new disc, Release Me.
Here is a great video from Portland's KINK FM radio station's "Bing Lounge" of Lyle and his band doing this beaut of a song.

Eric is another personal favorite of mine and actually performs in Omaha every year or two as part of Jerome Brich's FolkHouse series. See folkhouseconcerts.com.

You can find out more about Eric's music at bluerubymusic.com
and check out a video of the recording sessions for Eric's latest CD Live at the Red Shack, with guests including Lyle Lovett and many more greats....
seriously, check this out!

There is lots of great music coming our way in the coming days, including tonight's Bonnie Raitt & Mavis Staples show at the Orpheum.

Sunday night's rockabilly night looks cool with Omaha's The Willards, Des Moines' Rumble Seat Riot and the Hot Tail Honeys at Gator O'Malley's, Sunday, Aug. 26, after 7:30 p.m.

Also Sunday night the folks at Lincoln's Zoo Bar are getting together with those Tijuana Gigolos to celebrate Tony Meza's birthday. (SHOTS!) The Gigolos play 6-8 p.m. or so and have a new CD out, Shotgun.

The vibe really gets cookin'  at the Zoo when the Gigolos are in the house, but here's a video from their recent CD release celebration at the Bourbon Theatre.

Next week's Don't Miss Shows include the always amazing and soulful Carolyn Wonderland on Tuesday at The Waiting Room.
See waitingroomlounge.com
And if you haven't heard Carolyn yet, well, here, take a listen.

The Blues Society of Omaha is hosting the Carolyn Wonderland show and Cold in Hand opens at 5 p.m.
After Carolyn's show head on over to Barley Street where Matt Cox Band and Brad Hoshaw open for boog from Philadelphia. (See iamboog.com)

Wednesday, Aug. 29, 6:30-7:45 p.m. there is a last-minute BSO showcase at P.S. Collective in Benson with touring act Doug Deming & Dennis Gruenling w/The Jewel Tones CD Release Party

www.reverbnation.com/dennisgruenling
Admission to the show itself is a low-dough $5. There will be a  harmonica workshop with the band starting at 5:30 and participation in the harp workshop is $20.

Next Thursday, Aug. 29, Trampled Under Foot is at The 21st Saloon for the 5:30 p.m. show and Nashville's Elizabeth Cook and Tim Carrol are at Waiting Room after 9 p.m.
If you dig country and Americana this is going to be a cool show.

Also I am sending my old friend Larry Boehmer some birthday wishes, as he continues his battle with advancing cancer down in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Larry and say a prayer for him and his family. He taught us all about and gave us all so much great music. Last year we all went, 100 people and more, to celebrate his birthday. This year was a quieter event, but we all wished we'd been able to gather again. Here's the link to the article Catharine Huddle wrote after the trip last year.

Hoodoo updates, news and video extras

I wrote last week about the effort by a group of Austin musicians to help Miss Lavelle White, an Austin icon who has found herself in need of help with housing.
Check this blog post by Carolyn Wonderland to learn more about Miss Lavelle's situation and how you can help with a donation. Miss Lavelle only played here a few times that I know of, once at McKenna's, probably in the 1990s. She is now in her 80s, and a group of Austin musicians have started HOME or Housing Opportunities for Musicians & Entertainers to help Miss Lavelle and ultimately to help others in similar situations.

This week many of my Austin and California music industry friends are mourning the loss of Brent Grulke, the longtime Creative Director for SXSW who died suddenly this week, from a heart attack after dental surgery. My friend Cary Baker of Conqueroo pr described posted to his Facebook page, "I loved Brent like a brother. His professionalism was exceeded only by his passion and knowledge of music and being a rare gentleman in a cut-throat world. This news doesn't feel real to me now..."
Though I personally never met Brent, I was reminded again how small the world is when I learned that this mover and shaker on the Austin music scene, beloved by so many, was born in North Platte, Nebr., and lived with his family for a while in Omaha before the family moved on to several other cities. Such a small world.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Brent's family and friends. He leaves behind a young son and the family is asking for memorial donations to  be made to the Graham Grulke Education Fund, c/o Brad Grulke, 3601 Bee Creek Rd, Spicewood Texas 78669. Read his obit to see how one person can make such a lasting impact on their local scene and amongst their friends.

Brent Grulke, Austin American-Statesman Obituary
Austin writer Michael Corcoran also posted a tribute to Grulke here titled "A friend of music, a listener of life" michaelcorcoran.net/archives/1861

Certainly another reminder in Brent's death to make sure every moment counts. Don't waste a second!

My Hero-Pal Jon Dee Graham has a new CD out, Garage Sale -- you can get it at jondeegrahamco.bandcamp.com/
It sounds like Jon Dee will be back in the area in the fall!

Here is an absolutely excellent video of Jon Dee backing up his son William Harries Graham, on William's composition Rock 'n' Roll in the Street...which he wrote back when he was 5 years old! The band Residual Kid is backing them up.
Check it!

Another hero-pal, Curtis Salgado, is getting back to gigging this weekend after spending the last month recovering from lung surgery to remove a suspicious tumor from his lung. Doctors expect a full recovery and Curtis will be at Lincoln's Zoo Bar Tuesday, Sept. 4, 6-9 p.m.
He will be back in Omaha on Friday, Oct. 12, performing on a double-bill with Joe Louis Walker as a benefit for the Playing with Fire concert series. See www.theslowdown.com/events/playing-with-fire-fundraiser/
Here's a little video of Curtis and his band recorded in April of this year for local Portland radio station KINK FM, complete with horn section and singers! Mighty fine stuff! I can't wait to see Curtis back in action!

Also, the Chip-In for Curtis' medical expenses is still taking donations, please share it around with Curtis' fans. curtissalgado.chipin.com/curtis-salgado-medical-fund

The benefit and tribute concert for Javier Ochoa is Friday night, Aug. 17, at The Waiting Room...
I expect there will be a packed house full of fans and friends paying respects to one of Omaha's most beloved musicians. For details see Remembering Javier A Benefit & Tribute Facebook Page

The new column is online. Lots of great music all over Linoma this weekend and big concerts coming up from B.B. King and Robert Cray at Lincoln's Pinewood Bowl tonight, Aug. 16, to Lyle Lovett next Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Holland Performing Arts Center and Bonnie Raitt & Mavis Staples next Friday, Aug. 24, at the Orpheum.

Hoodoo for Aug. 16 in The Reader, Clubs, Concerts & Ribs!

Clubs, Concerts & Ribs
This Thursday, Aug. 16, 5:30-8:30 p.m., two of Texas’ top roots musicians hit The 21st Saloon. Singer-songwriter Randy McAllister has a soulful voice and lyrics with a distinctive viewpoint. His songs celebrate life and offer modern-day twists on the blues, taking on topics from the humorous to contemporary life's tough situations. Joining McAllister is guitarist Buddy Whittington. He is a six-string slinger who’s renown in Texas and who toured for 15 years with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, replacing Coco Montoya.
Musician’s Musicians
Two big favorites of Zoo Bar musician, bartender and talent booker Josh Hoyer are coming to the metro. California singer-songwriter David Vidal plays the Zoo Tuesday, Aug. 21, 6-9 p.m. A Philadelphia promoter raved, “David’s rich voice enhances the depth of the lyrics and the listener feels you have stumbled on a truth-teller for sure.”
Hoyer also recommends Los Angeles singer-songwriter Kevin Sandbloom. Sandbloom’s vocals have soul and a wide R&B range. Sandbloom’s credits include writing the title track to Robben Ford’s Supernatural album. Kevin Sandbloom hits the Barley Street Thursday, Aug. 23 with Citizen’s Band and plays Lincoln’s Zoo Bar Friday, Aug. 24, after 9 p.m.

Kelly Richey
A performer since 1986, Ohio-based guitarist Kelly Richey was originally inspired by icons like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Janis Joplin. Richey is a winner of multiple “best of” awards in the Cincinnati area. See kellyrichey.com. Richey plugs in at Lincoln’s Zoo Bar Wednesday, Aug. 22, 6-9 p.m. and plays The 21st Saloon Thursday, Aug. 23, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Hullabaloo, Benson First Friday, Omaha Girls Rock, Sunday Roadhouse

It is another busy week on the Linoma Music scene.
One cool thing going on that I didn't get to in my column is the second annual Omaha Girls Rock camp.
The camp for girls ages 8-18 is designed to use music to teach young women to use their voice both literally and metaphorically, to empower them to be their most confident and creative selves!
The camp culminates with a show Saturday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m., putting the girls and their bands together onstage at Slowdown.
HearNebraska.org has been documenting the daily sessions with photo essays.
You can find the most recent photos by photographer Mike Machian here
hearnebraska.org/content/omaha-girls-rock-days-3-and-4-photo-essay
Find more details at
facebook.com/omahagirlsrock
and omahagirlsrock.com

The second annual Hullabaloo is happening this weekend at River West Park just west of Waterloo at 23101 West Maple Road. A weekend camping and music pass is $60 at the gate. Day passes are $20. The event organizer is Brandon Miller of Kris Lager Band.
Here's the posted
band schedule and
a map of the site.
Award-winning blues rock guitarist Walter Trout headlines the Sunday events at Hullabaloo with a 7 p.m. show. Kris Lager Band performs at 6 p.m. and Brad Cordle band plays at 5 p.m. on Sunday with other music going on earlier in the afternoon.
There is also a website hullabaloomusicfestival.com/

Here's an up-close-and-onstage view clip from KLB's set at  Hullabaloo last year....

Saturday night's other options include The Tijuana Gigolos having another CD release party for their new disc
Shotgun at Lincoln's Bourbon Theater. Check out the details at
https://www.facebook.com/events/253194348126031/https://www.facebook.com/events/253194348126031/
Remember it's always more fun
to drink with the band!

I'm really excited about the return of David Olney & Sergio Webb to the Sunday Roadhouse at The Side Door Lounge this Sunday, Aug. 5. Their last gig was epic and a bit hard to quantify...there's music, featuring Olney's perceptive and unique songwriting and Webb's instrumental virtuosity, there's laughter, sometimes there's poetry.
The Side Door Lounge is located at 3530 Leavenworth St.
Doors open at 4, show starts at 5 p.m. Tickets at the door are $20.
See www.SundayRoadhouse.com

Here's one of my favorite tunes of theirs, as recorded by Music Fog in March, 2010.
"Postcard from Mexico"

Benson First Friday is going on tonight, Friday, Aug. 3. Art is displayed in many stores and shops and even bars throughout Benson. There are street performances from DJs and bands. You'll find maps and information posted throughout Benson this evening. There is an artist's market inside the Benson Theatre and brief tours of the usually off-limits stage space will be available also.
Happy hour specials at a few venues with art on display from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Check it all out on the Benson First Friday (BFF) event page  Benson First Friday on Facebook
Here's a phone-cam snapshot
I took of the models doing the
Concrete Catwalk of summer fashions,
they took the center lane of Maple
to strut their stuff!

And if you don't do anything else I suggest this year, at least go buy Jon Dee Graham's wonderful new disc Garage Sale. Check it out and purchase digital downloads here jondeegrahamco.bandcamp.com/
The first four songs alone are worth the price of the disc!  I LOVE, Love, LOVE the opening track "Unafraid."

Please remember to head on over to the official Hoodoo column in The Reader for more musings from me. You'll always find the latest column
